Most gasoline engines have PCV valves (crankcase forced ventilation) to allow the engine to ventilate, but contaminants in the channeling "can deposit around the PCV valves and can clog them. If the PCV valve is blocked, the polluted gas will flow back into the air filter and pollute the filter element, which will reduce the filtration capacity.
